Insurance will not replace what it cannot verify. An appraisal is the document that turns "it was expensive" into something a carrier, an attorney, or a buyer will actually accept.

Types of Appraisal

The Right Value for the Right Purpose

The same ring can carry three different numbers depending on why it is being valued. We prepare the standard that matches what you actually need the document to do.

  • Insurance Appraisal Replacement value documentation your carrier will accept. Required by most policies before a piece can be scheduled and covered for its true worth.
  • Estate & Probate Fair market valuations for estate settlement, probate filings, and dividing jewelry equitably among family members.
  • Resale Valuation Know what a piece is realistically worth before you sell, trade, or consign it. This is the number a buyer works from.
  • Updating an Appraisal Gold, platinum, and gemstone markets move. A value from a decade ago may leave you badly underinsured today.

Not sure which one you need? Tell us what you are trying to accomplish — insure it, divide an estate, or sell it — and we will point you to the right type.

The Process

What to Expect

Most appraisals are completed here in the store, and you will know the timeline and the price before any work begins.

1

Bring It In

Drop by during business hours or book a time. Tell us what the appraisal is for — that determines the value standard we use.

2

We Examine It

The piece is measured, weighed, and inspected under magnification. Stones are graded and every detail is recorded.

3

We Check Current Market

Metal and gemstone values are verified against today's market, not what the piece sold for years ago.

4

You Receive the Document

A signed written appraisal with photographs, ready to hand to your agent, attorney, or buyer.

—

Revisit It Periodically

Every few years is a good rule for insurance appraisals, so your coverage keeps pace with replacement cost.

Bring any paperwork you already have — original receipts, grading reports, or a previous appraisal. It gives us a faster, more accurate starting point.

What You Receive

What Your Appraisal Includes

A complete appraisal is a formal document, not a price tag. Here is what goes into yours.

01

Full Description

Metal, weight, measurements, and construction recorded in detail.

02

Stone Analysis

Measurements, cut, color, and clarity assessed for each stone present.

03

Photographs

Clear images of the piece so it can be identified without ambiguity.

04

Maker & Hallmarks

Designer, brand, and any stamps or hallmarks found on the piece.

05

Stated Value

The value, the standard it was determined under, and the date prepared.

06

Signature

Signed and dated, ready to submit to your insurance carrier.

Keep a copy somewhere other than your jewelry box — a safe deposit box, a cloud folder, or with your insurance agent. A document lost alongside the piece helps no one.

Common Questions

Still have questions about appraising a piece? Give us a call or bring it by — we are happy to talk it through.

Why can't I just use my receipt for insurance?
A receipt proves what you paid, not what the piece is or what it would cost to replace. Most carriers require a written appraisal that describes the piece in enough detail to identify and replace it — metal, stone grades, measurements, and photographs. A receipt has none of that.
How often should I update my appraisal?
Every few years is a good rule for insurance appraisals. Gold, platinum, and gemstone prices move, and a value from a decade ago may leave you underinsured. Some carriers also ask for an updated document periodically — check with your agent.
Do I need an appointment?
Walk-ins are welcome, but calling ahead helps — especially if you have several pieces or need the document by a particular date. Give us a call or text and we will make sure someone is available to look at it with you.
Can you appraise jewelry I didn't buy from you?
Yes. We appraise pieces regardless of where they were purchased, including inherited and antique jewelry. Bring in any paperwork you already have — a prior appraisal or a lab grading report gives us a useful starting point.
How long does it take?
It depends on the piece and how many items you bring. Simpler pieces often move quickly, while pieces with multiple stones or unusual construction take longer. We will give you a timeline when you drop off.
What does an appraisal cost?
Pricing depends on the piece and the number of items being appraised. Call, text, or bring it by and we will quote you before any work begins — no surprises.
Will the appraised value be what I could sell it for?
Usually not, and that surprises people. An insurance appraisal states replacement cost at retail, which is typically higher than what a buyer would pay you. If you are thinking about selling, ask for a resale valuation instead — that is the number that matters for a sale.
Does my piece have to leave the store?
For most appraisals, no. If a piece ever needs specialized testing we will tell you before anything goes anywhere, and you will know exactly where it is and when it will be back.

Jewelry Appraisals in Modesto, California

Gabriel Fine Jewelers provides written jewelry appraisals for customers throughout Modesto and the Central Valley. Whether you are scheduling an engagement ring on a homeowners policy, settling an estate, or deciding whether to sell an inherited piece, an appraisal gives you a documented description and a defensible value — something a receipt or a verbal estimate cannot do.

Insurance appraisals state replacement value — what it would cost to replace the piece today at retail. Estate appraisals state fair market value for probate and equitable distribution. Resale valuations tell you what a buyer is realistically likely to offer. Every appraisal records metal type and weight, stone measurements, cut, color and clarity assessments, setting style, maker and hallmarks, and photographs.

Most appraisals are completed in store, and your piece stays in the building the entire time. Because precious metal and gemstone markets move, we recommend revisiting an insurance appraisal every few years so your coverage keeps pace with replacement cost. Customers come to us from Modesto, Turlock, Ceres, Riverbank, Oakdale, Ripon, Manteca, and Salida. Call, text, or visit our showroom at McHenry Village.

Appraised values are professional opinions of value as of the date of the appraisal, based on the stated purpose and value standard. Values change with market conditions, and an appraisal is not an offer to purchase. Insurance carriers set their own documentation requirements — confirm with your agent what your policy requires.
